Event Operations Captain

Omahas Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is seeking an Event Operations Captain to assist in the execution of events, both daytime and evening, picnics and birthday parties, including set-up through fulfillment. The Event Operations Captain is the main contact from the Zoo for the client. This position is required to work on as-needed basis, which includes evenings, weekends and some holidays. This position reports directly to the Manager Event Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

• Assist vendors upon their arrival as all vendors need an on-grounds, Zoo employee escort.

• Ensure that Front Gate Security, bartenders, event assistants and birthday party leaders arrive promptly for event.

• Assist client throughout the event with any troubleshooting needs.

• Serve as the main Zoo contact for the event for the client.

• Prior and throughout the event, check the facility. Make sure restrooms are clean, all lights and A/V equipment are working.

• Monitor under-age drinking, over-indulgent drinking, damage of the facilities, etc.

• Fill out the appropriate forms and reports to include client change form, accidents report or other incidents you encountered throughout the evening.

• Assist bartenders and supervise staff with setup and tear down and replenishing stock when necessary.

• Supervise and give direction to Banquet staff and bartenders

• Make sure the building is ready for opening the next morning (i.e. cleaning, taking out trash, making sure rental equipment is picked up, lights out, etc.) and lock all doors.

• Dismiss Front Gate Security, Banquet Staff and Bartenders at the end of an event.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• This position will supervise event staff such as bartenders, birthday party leaders and event assistants. 

Qualifications:

• Experience in Event Planning, Food and Beverage service or prior hospitality experience is helpful.

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

• Must be available to work weekends, holidays and odd hours.

• Must hold a valid drivers license.

• Able to lift 50 lbs.

• Work in various weather conditions.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Basic competence in subordinates duties and tasks.

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

• Versatility, flexibility and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.

• Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.

• Strong interpersonal skills.

• Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels.

• Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following:

• Have the ability to move between multiple venues and work areas.

• Must assist in moving product between multiple areas within the Zoo.

Work Environment:

• This position works primarily in an indoor event room environment, however, a significant portion of the duty is outdoor exotic animal/zoo environment subject to all types of weather conditions.
