  • Effectively recommending the following: hiring, training and monitoring work, scheduling, directing, rewarding, disciplining and evaluating subordinate staff. Accept accountability for the performance of subordinate staff as well as the overall team achievements and/or results.

  • Management and supervision of the animal department and employees and volunteers assigned to it.

  • Assisting in planning and coordinating standard operating procedures and operation manual in assigned program areas. Developing program goals and objectives in accordance with those of the Zoo and Park District.

  • Overseeing the operations of the Zoo in the absence of the Zoo Director and the Collections Curator.

  • Preparing department budgets in conjunction with Zoo Director and maintaining budgetary control on related line items. Keeping Director advised of animal department activities and needs.

  • Maintaining active involvement in the programs of the AZA and related organizations.

  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the animal collection plan and animal acquisitions and dispositions.

  • Assisting in the development of new exhibits and monitoring the construction/remodeling of exhibits.

  • Directing Animal Keepers in their duties.

  • Supervising and participating in preventative medicine program and acting as a liaison with the contract veterinarians. Assisting in medical procedures and overseeing infirmary inventory. Overseeing animal restraint and administration of medication.

  • Reviewing and updating animal management protocol in conjunction with Zoo Director.

  • Overseeing Zoo's training and enrichment programs as well as pest control and purchase of animal supplies.

  • Coordinating with Collections Coordinator in maintaining records and permits and research projects.

  • Assisting in the creation of the best possible guest experience for Zoo visitors.

  • Cooperating with other departments to fulfill mission of the Zoo. Learning basic skills and routines of all other Zoo departments and be able to assist in daily tasks as needed.

  • Serving as Peoria Park District and Peoria Zoo liaison with user groups and community residents.

  • Responding to animal emergencies/security alarms during off-duty hours.

  • Knowing and following all safety procedures related to the duties performed. Overseeing Zoo safety program, including drills, records and compliance with all aspects of the Park District's safety program.

  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
