Bird Keeper

Responsibilities: The Riverbanks Bird department is looking for a motivated and inspired team member to work with over 300 birds representing ~ 70 species! Under general supervision is responsible for the proper care of Riverbanks animals in area of assignment.  Conducts husbandry duties, according to departmental guidelines, including feeding animals, cleaning, and maintaining exhibits. Monitors animal health and behavior and uses proper enrichment and animal training principles. Maintains detailed behavioral, reproductive, and medical records. Takes proper measures to ensure the security of animal enclosures. Assists with upkeep of all facilities. May be involved in various AZA, conservation, and other professional activities. Works cooperatively with other departments including maintenance, horticulture, education, and events. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Curator of Birds.

This position includes opportunities to:

• Be trained to work on all 5 avian runs.

• Participate in artificial incubation, hand rearing and parent assist rearing for Lorikeets, Flamingos, Penguins and much more! 

• Become open water and dry suit dive certified and join the Riverbanks Dive Team. 

• Participate in a schedule rotation providing periodic weekends off.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree (in one of the Biological Sciences), and two to three years of experience working with animals, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. SCUBA and First Aid/CPR certifications are desirable. Must possess or qualify for a valid SC driver's license.

Salary: $15.13/hr
